Building the Perfect Smoothie: A Simple Guide to Fruit, Greens and Superfood Powders

A well-made smoothie can be one of the simplest ways to enjoy more fruit, leafy greens, superfoods and whole-food ingredients in one. It can be light and refreshing, thick and satisfying, or packed with colourful ingredients for a great morning start.

A delicious smoothie begins with a balanced combination of fruit and liquid, followed by greens, optional healthy fats or protein if required, and a few carefully chosen superfood additions.

Use this guide as a flexible formula and adjust the ingredients to suit your health goal, taste, appetite and personal wellness philosophy.

1. Begin with fruit

Fruit creates the natural sweetness, flavour and body of your smoothie. Frozen fruit produces a thicker, colder result, while fresh fruit generally makes a lighter smoothie.

Start with approximately one to two cups of fruit. Some easy options include:

  • Bananas for natural sweetness and a creamy consistency

  • Mango or pineapple for a tropical flavour

  • Berries for colour and a sweet-tart taste

  • Oranges for a fresh citrus flavour

  • Dragon fruit for a vibrant tropical smoothie

  • Apples or pears for gentle sweetness

Frozen banana is particularly helpful when you want a creamy smoothie without using dairy products. Frozen bananas are so versatile to make either your smoothie, a smoothie bowl with less added liquid and even nice-cream for a fruity ice cream dessert.

For an easy berry boost, add Organic Wild Blueberry Powder. Made from whole wild blueberries, it offers the characteristic deep blue-purple colour and intense sweet-tart flavour of the fruit in a convenient powder. It works beautifully with bananas, mangoes, cherries and other berries and is a nutritious powerhouse jammed with antioxidants.

Try this combination: banana, mango, wild blueberry powder and coconut water.

2. Add leafy greens

Smoothies make it easy to include leafy greens alongside naturally sweet fruit. Begin with a small handful and gradually add more as you become familiar with the flavour.

Popular choices include:

  • Baby spinach. The ultimate choice as it blends smoothly and pairs wonderfully with banana and mango.

  • Kale

  • Cos lettuce

  • English Spinach

  • Fresh herbs such as parsley or coriander. An immediate health boost by adding beneficial herbs and if eating herbs is not your thing then adding them blended in with fruit is a great way to get the natural benefits without the strong taste.

  • Barley grass juice powder

Spinach has a mild taste that blends easily with banana, mango and berries and orange. Kale is more noticeable and often works best with sweeter fruits such as pineapple or mango.

Organic Barley Grass Juice Powder is another convenient way to add a green whole-food ingredient. It is made from young barley grass that is harvested, juiced and dried into a fine powder. Unlike ground barley grass, it is made from the extracted juice of the grass when the young shoots are at peak nutrient levels.  This green superfood powder is packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants

Start with a small amount and adjust according to taste. Its fresh green flavour pairs well with banana, mango, pineapple, orange and coconut water.

Try this combination: banana, pineapple, orange, barley grass juice powder and water.

3. Decide whether to include healthy fats

Healthy fats can create a richer, more satisfying smoothie. They are entirely optional and may also be enjoyed separately from fruit-based smoothies, depending on your preferences.

Options include:

  • Avocado

  • Chia seeds

  • Hemp seeds

  • Flaxseeds

  • Nut or seed butter

  • Coconut flesh

  • Unsweetened coconut yoghurt

A small amount is generally enough. Too much can overpower the fruit or make the smoothie unusually thick.

Avocado creates a smooth texture with a relatively neutral flavour. Chia and flaxseeds absorb liquid, so you may need to add extra water if your smoothie becomes too thick.

4. Consider your protein options

Fruit, leafy greens and other plant foods naturally contain varying amounts of amino acids. If you would like to make your smoothie more substantial, you can also include an additional protein-containing food.

Food-first options include:

  • Hemp seeds

  • Chia seeds

  • Ground flaxseeds

  • Oats

  • Nut or seed butter

  • Spirulina powder - Our top option for protein!

Australian Spirulina Powder is a concentrated whole-food addition with a naturally deep green colour. Soul Organics Spirulina is grown in Queensland and freeze-dried before being milled into powder. According to research Dried spirulina is about 60% to 70% protein by dry weight. A single standard tablespoon (7 grams) of spirulina powder contains about 4 grams of protein. Spirulina is known to be a complete protein as It contains all nine essential amino acids that your body needs. Because its flavour is distinctive, begin with a small amount. It combines particularly well with banana, mango, orange, pineapple and wild blueberry.

Try this combination: banana, mango, orange juice, Australian Spirulina Powder and water.

5. Choose the right liquid

Liquid helps the ingredients move freely through the blender and determines the final consistency. Begin with approximately one cup, then add more as needed.

Good choices include:

  • Filtered water

  • Coconut water -our top nutritious and hydrating choice

  • Fresh orange juice

  • Apple juice

  • Unsweetened plant milk

  • Unsweetened coconut milk

  • Aloe water

Coconut water works well as a base for almost any smoothie and is always our top choice. Did you know that Coconut water is one of the highest sources of electrolytes as well as being filled with vitamins and minerals and is low in calories. You can mix half and half into your smoothie, coconut water pairs well with any other liquid like orange juice or aloe water.

Plant milk produces a creamier smoothie, making it particularly suitable for combinations containing banana, dates or oats.

Add less liquid for a smoothie bowl and more for a drinkable smoothie.

6. Select your superfood additions

Superfood powders can add colour, concentrated flavour and variety while adding their own specific combinations of essential vitamins and minerals and nutrient boost.

Organic Wild Blueberry Powder

A whole-fruit powder with an intense berry flavour and naturally deep blue-purple colour. Add it to banana, mango, cherry or mixed-berry smoothies.
